KERRY FILM FESTIVAL 2013 HQ

On October 8th 2013 the annual Kerry Film Festival kicked off with a new approach and dynamic. Local businesses support the Kerry Film Festival to a huge extent. It’s obvious why.  5 days packed with showings to suit all age groups.Knowledge of film is not a prerequisite!

Kerry Film Courses

Tralee is a hub of many highly regarded 3rd level film and production courses .More than the norm. I am only here a year and am already blown away by how many people are being turned out.  The IT in Tralee and Fás Tralee students have extremely high standards of ability and skills not to mention talent. Many of them got involved with the festival this year which was great to see. I mentored some students from Tralee IT this year.

Kerry Film Makers

The 50hr Film project was launched on Wednesday by Kerry Film maker in residence Michael Kelly. Its aim was to challenge film-makers to create a short film to be completed by midday Saturday.  The prize for the best film was €500. The race was on! I kept bumping into film crews throughout the week, which was great. I felt like I was back in Dublin, working the production route again. Great to see the local’s reaction to film crews working amongst them! The worthy winners were delighted with themselves. Their film was a mini triumph in my opinion. Well done to the gang who won with “Fools After School” – worthy winners.

KERRY FILM FESTIVAL 2013 AWARDS WITH ANDREW MORRISSEY

The Irish film based on the tragedy of Ger McDonell’s adventure on K2 in 2008 was a highlight for me. A drama documentary shot with great care and attention to detail. It was moving and exhilarating all at the same time. A family’s pain was obvious in the heart wrenching talk by Ger’s brother JJ at the Q & A session after the film showed in Siamsa Tíre Theatre. A film worth seeking out when it goes on general release in November.

So take a few minutes to look at all the Kerry Film Festival photography throughout the week in this youtube clip above.I’ll write some more in a couple of weeks. All festival photography by my good self. All available to buy directly through my contact form on my website. Many thanks filmgoers…

Kerry GAA Senior Football Final County League 2013

Kerry GAA Senior Football Final County League 2013

In the GAA calendar the league is the bread and butter of the club scene, and no more so than in the Kerry GAA football scene. Now in it’s 43rd season Kerry GAA fans travel all over the county to support their club teams from Tarbert to Kenmare and Dingle to Rathmore and everywhere in between.

Kerry GAA

This year the Kerry GAA Football County League Senior Football final was an all Tralee affair, where Kerins O’Rahillys were pitted against their long time rivals Austin Stacks, to see who gets bragging rights and claims The Credit Union Division 1 Senior County League Final 2013.  Strand Road was the venue this year giving Kerins O’Rahillys home advantage.  Austin Stacks representing the Rock Street area of Tralee were last winners in 2011 and were after their 10th Kerry Football League Championship. They were also looking to put a poor performance in the County Championships Final behind them after a heavy defeat to Dr. Crokes.  Kerins O’Rahillys for their part were looking for their 5th league title, having last won in 2008.

These two teams could not be separated when they met in round 1 back in March.  This  match was played under heavy showers which made the surface slippery underfoot.  Austin Stacks had the upper hand during a close first half and led by 0-05 to 0-03 going into the interval.  Indeed for most most of the second half it looked like it was going to be Austin Stacks’ day.  They managed to keep their nose in front up until the last 10 minutes until Kerins clawed their way back to 0-09 a piece.  In the end however it was the men from Strand Road who came out on top with a score of 0-11 to 0-10, a great finish to a furious game. Well done to Kerins O’Rahilly GAA Club and commiserations to Austin Stacks on a gallant effort.  They will both be joined by Finuge and Currow next season.

It’s been a fantastic weekend for Kerry GAA  clubs. Congratulations to Na Gaeil Junior Ladies team, also from Tralee,  who defeated Shannon Gaels from Roscommon in the All Ireland Junior Club semi-final also played in Tralee. Meanwhile Keel GAA Club overcame Mitchelstown in the AIB Munster junior Football Club Championship quarter final played in Fermoy.  Dr. Crokes from Killarney continued their impressive march towards Croke Park on St. Patrick’s Day with a 3-16 to 1-05 win over Tipperary’s Loughmore Castleiney.
